Your Guide to the Ultimate Outdoor Cinema Events this Summer
I went to a showing of Do The Right Thing at the Hollywood Forever Cemetary a few summers ago and have been HOOKED on outdoor cinema ever since!
There were food trucks, a DJ, a cool photo booth where you could take pictures with a bodega (a perfect shout out to the movie) as your backdrop! We were even able to bring our own blankets, lawn chairs and food inside. This was more than just watching a movie you’ve seen a hundred times in the outdoors, it was a whole experience. The vibe of everyone in attendance felt truly communal.
With summer approaching, I wanted to share with you some of my favorite outdoor cinema events. They are the ones that comprise all the things I loved about that first event at Hollywood Cemetery. Since then I’ve been to others and although seeing movies you’ve seen before only this time with a change in venue, it is the venue that makes it so special.

From the Event Organizer: Hollywood and Vine’s Ricardo Montalbán Theater is at the center of one of the most iconic destinations in the world, and the views from the rooftop are spectacular. So head upstairs for the Montalbán Rooftop Movie Series, where you can enjoy L.A.’s cool night air from atop the historic 1920s theater while being treated to screenings of a plethora of great films. You may find yourself sitting near (or being entertained by) new filmmakers, actors and celebrities who drop by for their own evening of fun. Take advantage of an exceptional variety of craft beer, wine and cocktails, fresh popcorn and specialties from culinary partner Umami Burger available for purchase, plus a relaxed pre-show atmosphere. Come early to partake in food and drink, score the best seat, maybe play a game of Jenga or strike a pose in the new selfie video/photo booth. The films start at sunset, and range from comedy to adventure and everything in between.
From the Event Organizer: Street Food Cinema has developed 12 different locations to provide moviegoers with more chances to catch their favorite flick on the big screen. Come early and catch top local bands and see if you’re lucky enough to get chosen for our nightly audience game. And, of course, we all know some of the tastiest eats comes from a food truck so we’re curating the best of the best to fill your belly, mind and soul as the sun sets and the movie begins.
From the Event Organizer: Eat See Hear Movies combines popular films with live indie music and some of the city’s most famous food trucks to create the ultimate nighttime outdoor hangout. Get a group of friends together for a laid-back night under the stars in beautiful Griffith Park, where you can catch some of the hottest up-and-coming bands and check out the latest and greatest in street-side cuisine and grab a drink at the on-site bar. Make some time to check out The Autry, because you’ll also receive free admission to the museum during the event. Then, settle in on the Autry National Center’s lush lawn and get ready to quote along with your favorite movies, running all summer long.
From the Event Organizer: In a celebration of the power of film and television to influence cultural understanding and broaden the human experience, the SAG-AFTRA Foundation presents Game Changers, a four-night outdoor screening series featuring groundbreaking films and television. The media screened significantly impacted diversity and representation in media, re imagined traditional narratives and achieved major advances in storytelling. Before each screening, special guests participate in a moderated conversation to provide their insights on the cultural impact and artistic influence these innovative projects brought to the world.
