I am SUPER pumped about a new venture I am embarking on with a couple of good friends of mine. Alex Venegas, Teyhou Smyth and I will discuss current events, politics and compelling social issues through the prism of our ethnic backgrounds on our newly developed podcast entitled “Ethnically Correct”.
At a time when racial and social issues are at an all time high, we wanted to create an environment where we can discuss these topics openly without trepidation. Our tag line “Be Brave Enough to Start a Conversation that Matters”, challenges us to have honest conversations about our own experiences and in turn we hope to inspire others to have the same dialogue within their own communities.
It is evident that people are not having these discussions as productively as they could be. Whether it is fear of being labeled racist or feeling frustrated and unheard, we feel that these types of conversations are not happening in a worthwhile way and we’d like to change that. In doing so we hope to discuss the way in which we experience the world from our African-American, Mexican American & Persian backgrounds.
We want to explore the way we interact with one another, ask the silly questions we may feel uncomfortable asking, and open up about our personal experiences. No we don’t pretend to speak for everyone in our race( in fact when we’re totally off base in our perception we invite you to let us know) but we do bring our own special perspective and we hope that through these conversations we open your minds to a new way of perceiving those that are different from you and the people in your own social circles.
Please follow our social channels below and be apart of the conversation!
So tell me, will you be tuning in?

I hope that you are able to get some good conversation going. I like these initiatives in person but find that things quickly seem to devolve into rudeness online, but maybe this one will get things going in a positive direction. Regardless, it is a great goal and I applaud your optimism and your efforts to engage in productive discourse.

Thank you for your support and encouraging words! It’s a bit scary to tackle these issues but we are hoping that if we start the conversation we can make it less taboo.

I hate when people try to say that there isn’t a race issues these days. Those people are such a part of the problem and it’s really heartbreaking how they just don’t seem to see it. I love that you’re starting something like this, and it’s great that you’re actually doing something to raise awareness. It’s wonderful, good job!

Thank you so much for saying that! We are so excited to begin this conversation and not just from the perspective of ethnic people but from non ethnic people as well (if there is such a thing). It all begins with a conversation and hopefully grows from there.

I can’t even imagine what it’s like to be dealing with some of the issues that have never touched me. I worry every day I’m not preparing my children to be kind and treat everyone with respect. It’s a hard line to follow and a tough subject to broach.

I think it’s great that you have a channel where you can talk about those challenges honestly without any trepidation or worry. Some people hold back in normal situations with the fear of being judged. This podcast must have a good following.

OMG I love this movement and would love to join. In today’s society I think we crossed the boundary and became so overly sensitive that people are afraid to ask questions or share their opinions. Everyone is just looking for words to pull people apart and call them racist. I think more discussions on this subject should be started as it will help tremendously!

Honest conversation tends to be off and misunderstood of most people in a different way. Everyone should have an open mind when discussing these kind of topic. I love the tagline “Be Brave Enough to Start a Conversation that Matters” coz braveness is what all we need.

Wow, this sounds great! I think it is important to have someone or someplace to discuss certain topics. For someone to feel safe and not worry about other people think. Can’t wait to follow along!

This is such an important conversation to be having and to continue to have! We need to get to the point where race isn’t an issue. We don’t need to become colorblind, we just need to accept people for who they are and realize there’s no difference on the inside between two people of different ethnicitys!

I think it’s an important conversation, and I think the fact that you’re doing it as a podcast rather than blog posts may make it more approachable for some people. The fact is, we all come at life from our unique perspectives – ethnic, socio-economic, and cultural. Even as a Canadian, my opinions and experiences vary greatly from my friends “south of the border.” More so than many of them realize, so I can imagine how eye-opening this podcast could be!

Good for you for diving into something that you are passionate about like this! I don’t know why people are afraid of talking about race issues. Sometimes it seems like the people whose voices are the loudest on these issues are only making matters worse and causing more racial divide because those with differing viewpoints often remain silent. I wish you well in this endeavor & I’m looking forward to see it succeed. Xo
