Creating a Spa Paradise in Your Powder Room for the Holidays

in Entertaining, Uncategorized on 21/11/14

His and Hers Bathroom "Contest"
The powder room-It’s the one place many people fail to pay much attention to when entertaining guests at home. I can walk into a beautifully decorated, (seemingly) clean home, enter the bathroom and know right away whether the host truly cares about their guests by how well they’ve cared for their powder room. A clean bathroom = a clean home, and besides, nothing makes me feel more at ease when using the little girls room outside of my own home than walking into one smelling of fresh flowers, with the warm glow of nice lighting and fresh towels to welcome me.
What’s even better is that it’s one of the easiest rooms to decorate and when done right it adds to the experience that is your party. Nothing shows you care about the comfort and well-being of your guests like a well stocked powder room, and whether you deem to call it a powder room or not you just may after following these easy steps…

Fresh Scents Make Sense

The question isn’t to smell fresh or not, the question is how will you bring all of that freshness into your lovely bathroom. Luckily for you there are so many options to choose from. From candles to plug-ins and mists, there is no reason why your bathroom shouldn’t smell divine. My favorite option however is that of  a clean smelling candle. Not only do candles add a great subtle fragrance (depending on which you choose), but they also add beautiful lighting and a calming feel throughout your home.

Towels on Racks on Racks on Racks

While using napkins for guests to dry their hands on is more sanitary and the route I usually go, coordinating the color of your towels with the color scheme of your bathroom is a chic touch. Plus it’s one of those detail’s that adds to the pretty of your powder room.

Lighten the Mood

Great lighting is just one of those things that while a small detail can do wonders when adding a sense of ambiance to a room. As stated above the light from a candle is perfect for this. Other options are night lights and changing lightbulbs to a lower wattage. One of my favorite uses of lights in the bathroom was a string a Christmas lights strung around a vanity.

Fancy Hand Soap & Lotion

It’s almost a no brainer to state that you should have hand soap in the restroom but adding lotion is a bit of nice extra touch that some hosts fail to use. With places like Home Goods, Ross and Target you have very low-cost affordable options to choose from.

Extra Toilet Paper

Nothing can be worse than going to the restroom and there not being enough toilet paper, add to that a restroom outside of your home and it’s an absolute disaster! Skip the embarrassment for you and your guests and add a couple of rolls of toilet paper so that guests can switch them out themselves when the roll gets low.

Sanitizing Wipes

Sanitizing wipes are like a warm embrace to your germaphobe friends. They also encourage guests to clean up after themselves without being too overt.

Plunger

After going to a party in my 20s, standing in line for the restroom for what seemed like an eternity to find that the person in front of me had clogged the toilet  only to be yelled at by the host for “sticking her damn tampons down the drain”, my worse fear has always been clogging the toilet. It could have just been a plumbing problem on the hosts part, but the look of pure horror in that girls eyes scared me to death and I’ve made sure to add a plunger in my restroom ever since.

Are there any other items you like to add to the bathroom during holiday festivities? What are some idea’s you can see yourself incorporating at your next shindig? As always, let me know in the comments below…

Great tips! I’m moving soon and can’t wait to jazz up my powder room using all of these tips! Do they sell metallic plungers anywhere? LOL

I like the idea of using Christmas lights in the bathroom and having extra toilet paper right where the guests can find it.

Great post! Lighting and smell make such a big difference! Even if you have a smell sensitive hubby like me, there are some natural ways and even spritzers that can help a lot!

I LOVE prepping our guest bathroom like this for when visitors come! I think it’s important to make people feel not only welcome in your home, but in the bathroom too!

Great tips! I always keep extra toilet paper pyramids on the toilet top, and extra soap under the sink, so that guests can help themselves if they need to or if things get busy! <3

I LOVE that you mentioned a plunger. I have worried about this for so long. I would die of embarrassment if I clogged someone’s toilet.

Oh my gosh, we are so guilty of having a horrible bathroom – nothing we do can make it better. We rent, so we can’t change the bathroom although there’s no fan and no windows so it gets really damp and is so difficult to clean because there’s holes everywhere etc etc. Not the bathroom I would like, but we have to make do.

I do try and make it as nice as possible when guests come over though!

Great ideas! The plunger is a must, the last thing you would want (or need to do) is clean up a stopped toilet!
